Venue Frequently Asked Questions for Provisions at Lower Fort Garry. Celebrate your wedding or event at our rustic ceremony, tent wedding and reception venue. We make all the arrangements to host your reception or event at the Historic Lower Fort Garry National site.

Is there a cost for my guests to enter the Historic Facility?  

With the rental of either a ceremony or reception location through Parks Canada, all of your guests receive free entrance onto the historic grounds. Please note interprepation hours

 

Are there restrictions as to where a wedding ceremony or reception may occur?

There are no restrictions as to the location for outdoor ceremonies, so long as our regular visitors continue to have access to the historic buildings and that your group does not interfere with other booked groups. With the exception of rooms in the Visitor Centre, Wedding Tent and Outdoor event structure, the interior of historic buildings can only be used during our off-season or after hours during our regular operating season.   

 

Do you provide a tent for a reception?  

Our tent is placed on the hill by the Red River. There are a couple of charges in addition to the catering services. There is a fee of $10 per person for the cost of tables, chairs and table linens as well as a Parks Canada fee of $490.60. Food minimums apply.  

 

Do you provide tables and chairs for receptions?

Tables and chairs for all indoor events are included. Outdoor receptions include a $10 per person fee for the cost of tables, chairs and linens.  

 

Can an outside catering company be used?  

Provisions Events and Weddings is the only  commercial caterer for the facilities. With over 30 years’ experience, they can offer a wide variety of options and can help plan your entire wedding  

 

What happens if it rains?  

Based on availability, outdoor ceremonies may be moved into the theatre for no additional charge. Outdoor receptions can only be moved indoors if: there are fewer than 138 guests; no other events have been booked, and 24 hours’ notice is given.  

 

Can alcohol be served at a reception?  

Yes, our facilities are licensed and liquor can be booked through Provisions with no additional insurance required. If you would like to bring in your own liquor you must obtain an Occasional Permit.  

 

Can I throw rose petals at the ceremony?  

Yes you may, but they must be removed immediately following the ceremony. There will be an additional fee added to your bill for clean up if you do not arrange this yourself. Please discuss your plans for the ceremony site with the Wedding and Event Coordinator. Bubbles are always a great idea – but nothing that will litter the ground (including bird seed or biodegradable confetti).  

 
Are there any restrictions on the type of decorations that can be used?  

You are welcome to use decorations at the ceremony and reception sites that do not damage or mar any of the buildings or walls. You may not use nails, tape or other adhesives – but you may tie decor to pillars or use the Stick-Tak on interior walls.

Are there any musical restrictions?  

The Big House and the Picnic Shelter, Provisions Cafe as well as the Multi-purpose Room have sufficient electricity to supply most choices of music (portable CD player, live musicians, etc.), however, other outdoor venues will require long extension cords to reach an electrical source. All entertainment outside may need to have the volume reduced at 11:00 pm to comply with the RM of St. Andrews noise by-law.  

 

How long can the reception last?  

The reception can last until 1:00 am, at which point the Visitor Centre will close. It is possible to extend beyond this time for an additional daily rental fee; however, no alcohol can be served after 1:00 am.  

 

Is there a place where I can change prior to the ceremony?  

We suggest all Brides and Grooms arrive for their ceremony and reception dressed.     

 

How will my guests know where to go?

As guests arrive in the Visitor Centre, your users or staff can direct them to the appropriate venue. It is also possible to plant small signs, but they must be removed immediately following the event.  

 

I want my ceremony to be on the historic grounds. How will I and my guests get to the ceremony location?  

Most ceremony locations can be reached by a motor vehicle.. However, the car that drops you off must be removed immediately and parked in the visitors center parking lot. All guests are required to park in our parking lot adjacent to the Visitor Centre. Your guests have the option of walking through the grounds to your event as well.

 

Is smoking permitted at the site?  

There are designated smoking areas on both the historic and non-historic grounds. No smoking is allowed in any of the buildings. For tented receptions, or receptions in the multi-purpose room of the Visitor Centre, you are required to provide your guests with ashtrays immediately outside of your tent or in the solar patio off of the multi-purpose room. There will be an additional fee added to your bill for clean up if a large number of cigarette butts are found on the grounds.  

 

Am I able to bring in a wedding cake?  

Yes, a $50 will apply which covers cost of plates, napkins, utensils, and staff to cut and serve your cake. The fee is also applicable to cupcakes and candy stations but not display cakes. Cakes and cupcakes must be supplied by a certified bakery or facility.  All other food items must be approved by Provisions.  

When do I need to confirm meal choices and number of guests?

For all events, the guaranteed number attending must be confirmed no later than 10 days prior to the function. The number of guests billed will be the guaranteed number or the number of guests attended, whichever is higher. Menu selections must be submitted a minimum of 3 weeks prior to the function to ensure availability of most selections, proper staffing and coordination of the event. Only food supplied by Provisions will be allowed on the premises. For health and insurance reasons, we do not allow removal of food from the premises following a function.  

 

Gratuity and Taxes: All billable items are subject to applicable taxes and gratuity. A 15% gratuity will be applied to all food, beverage, rentals and service charges. Gratuity is subject to the Goods and Services Tax (GST).  
Prices  All prices are current and subject to change without notice until a detailed quote is provided by a Provisions representative, at which point prices remain fixed and guaranteed until the date of the event. Quotes are only valid if done 120 days before the event.  

 

Will Provisions Events and Weddings help me decorate items I bring in?  

If your decorations are fairly simple items (composed centerpieces) that can be placed on the table we may be able to help you. Anything that is more complicated or time-consuming (place cards for assigned seating, etc.) may result in an additional charge of $30.00 per hour (Minimum 3 hours) depending on the amount of time it takes. Details of your decorations must be discussed with Connie (Connie@ProvisionsLowerFortGarry.com) and decisions can be made at that time.   

All food, beverages and billable items are subject to applicable taxes and a 15% gratuity.  Pricing is in Canadian dollars and subject to change.
